Advocacy

“I’d been held at arm’s length and all the important decisions were made for me”

“There was little regard for my feelings”

“I felt invisible during the courts”

(‘In Our Shoes’, FJYPB / CAFCASS)

It is a common experience for children and young people to feel like their voice is not heard when they are experiencing divorce / relationship breakdown in their families. We offer one-to-one advocacy packages where we amplify your child’s needs and wishes and help you to agree a plan for how to support them.

“It’s been a very positive intervention to help me gain confidence around supporting the children. Thanks to Eily we now have a framework with key building blocks to consider, concrete agreed action points as well as various potential events and groups we can use for further support. What is particularly useful in my view is that the action points are tailored to each child – not just by age group but also to them as individuals following her visiting the children. (I was surprised – in a good way – to note how much Eily understood about each child following only one visit). The process and steps to agree on the plan felt well articulated, based on a professional facilitation – not easy given the conflict situations Eily works with – and remaining tailored to individual needs. The intervention has helped us to reframe our mindset focusing less on the trauma and heartache of the separation and more on how to move forward toward building a different equilibrium with the children at the centre. Overall as we have gained in confidence about supporting the children in the separation process and using concrete ways to help them, they have in turn also become more open and secure.” – Ms B, advocacy client

Every child is unique and so every journey is different, but below is a guide to our process.

“I didn’t know that someone like Eily existed, but she was able to offer me advice and support which helped me to better manage the transition for my son, T, with his new routine and also the communication between me and my ex-partner. This made me feel less stressed and more confident that I was doing the best that I could for my child. I strongly believe that Eily can help at any stage of separation and beyond, for couples living apart or co-parenting and I’m really glad to know her. I’d happily recommend her (and I have) to everyone I know” – Ms F, advocacy client

I found the sessions hard of course, but helpful and reassuring.  Eily was able to help us reframe some of the areas of disagreement, and encourage us to be positive about the future of co-parenting.  She provided my ex-husband and I with valuable support and advice whilst keeping our son and his wellbeing and feelings at the centre of the discussions. I am hopeful that the follow up documents she has provided will help us through this transition.” – Ms A, advocacy client

* We like to involve your child in the calls in an age-appropriate way if possible. We will be led by you, but we are comfortable speaking with children of around 7+.

** The quiz is designed to be completed by your child. We find children of around 7+ can do it themselves. For younger children, we ask both parents to complete it in the way you think your child would – an interesting exercise!

“I found the programme and the reports you prepared to be really insightful – the age appropriate insight into what each one [child] is feeling and experiencing really stuck with me and I’ve adapted my approach with each accordingly. I also found the way you described issues between me and [the children’s mum] to be spot on, and observed in this amazingly neutral language that we could both somehow agree with.” – Mr B, advocacy client
